Something that I remembered during the Varia event yesterday...

It's important to consider design when switching services. This is why I created Special Fish. I wanted to explore other possibilities for being online together. I think these alternative platforms are often too focused on the technical and governance side of things and could benefit from more conversations around how social media is designed. Design/aesthetics also shape conversations around community and governance so its seems worthwhile to start there.

Why does Mastodon look so much like Twitter or Facebook? It gives me almost the same feeling. Why are feeds, likes, and notification system the prevailing design choices? If we think of social media as just another website, the possibility of designing something that feels entirely different opens up.
